Entrepreneurship in Kuwait

‘Coming together is a beginning, keeping together is process, working together is success’ – Henry Ford

There is a long history of a bustling merchant culture in Kuwait. Since the 18th century, the country has been known for trade: whether in exporting goods, boat-building, or its pearl industry. Kuwait traditionally did not require entrepreneurs, as massive oil wealth and a relatively small population has helped guaranteed jobs for anyone who wants one.

But the government wants to change that and has begun to provide plenty of support – finance and otherwise – to those who want to give running their business a go.

'Silicon Desert: Can Kuwait move from oil to entrepreneurs?
Kuwait as a country seeks to create a new generation of entrepreneurs, as part of its ambition to diversify its oil – dependent economy and become regional finances and trade hub. Its plan is to focus entirely on Kuwait’s entrepreneurial ecosystem by creating “hubs” in various fields, where entrepreneurs can access services such as mentorship and financing. Kuwaiti's have great potential in technology and entrepreneurship, and with the added presence of expats, the country has the makings of a vibrant entrepreneurial scene.' – As on BBC News

As an independent public corporation with a total capital of KD 2 billion, the SME Fund will finance up to 80 percent of capital for feasible small and medium projects submitted by Kuwaiti nationals.
